The Dungeons of Torgar

The Dungeons of Torgar – Background

Before I say anything else, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge, with heavy heart, the appalling mass murder in Manchester.  The mindset necessary for a ‘person’ (and I use the term advisedly) to specifically target children, and then to consider themself morally superior, is beyond me.

I don’t know if it is or is not the best summary of the feelings, but the wistful sorrow of this song has been running through my head for several days.

This life, well its slipping right through my hands /

These days turned out nothing like I had planned…

Now – back to your regularly scheduled snarking about obscure gamebooks.

First of all – what’s with the non-ominous title?  After a veritable cascade of scary nouns (‘Doom’, ‘Horror’, ‘Terror’, ‘Death’ and ‘Fear’) I now have to gird my loins for The Dungeons of…..Torgar.

I guess maybe ‘Torgar’ is one of those place names in Magnamund that is meant to cause Pavlovian levels of dread (similiar to locations on Earth like Birkenau, the Bermuda Triangle and New Jersey).

Anyway.

The Background section (and get ready for a torrent of fantasy-esque names) lets me know that :

  • Prince Graygor, ruler of Eru drops by for a glass of brandy and a bit of a chat.
  • The Prince, in between gossipping about the latest Hollywood scandals, exchanges nominations for beautiful atresses.  Lone Wolf, of course mentions Julie Delpy, and then…
  • ….
  • ………….

rose-byrne-wallpapers-2f8a546c10b6499322e0960bbce9df24-large-687513

I GET REMINDED OF ROSE BYRNE, ARGUABLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AUSTRALIAN ACTRESS OF ALL TIME – GET IN YOUR BOX NICOLE KIDMAN.

Ahem.

  • One of the Prince’s patrols conveeeeniently found a single soldier wandering aimlessly near the borders of the ‘Hellswamp’.
  • Aside : I bet Joe Dever wishes he thought of that name before he came up with ‘Daziarn’.
  • This anonymous soldier has escaped from the ‘city-fortress’ of Torgar, but not before supposedly observing three ‘radiant gems’ being brought there from the Darklord city of Mozgoar.
  • Apparently the evil magicians who serve the Darklords, known as the Nadziranim, are using all of their powers to try and destroy the Lorestones.
  • I must therefore move at all possible speed to Eru, and then to Torgar, on order to try and infiltrate the city and retrieve the Lorestones.

Aside :

This is (or should be) Lone Wolf right about now :

I mean, seriously?  One lone soldier manages to, not only observe the exact item(s) I’m seeking being transported into the city, but is then able to single-handedly escape the impregnable city-fortress??

This screams one thing, and one thing only :

giphy23

We’ll see how this develops.

In the meantime, I need to pick another Kai Discipline.  I don’t think Psi-Surge is worth it at this time.  The ‘extra’ two points of Combat Skill (or four if the enemy is immune to Mindblast) is of marginal use when balanced against the compulsory loss of two ‘extra’ Endurance each round.  I therefore take Psi-Screen, with a view to completing the Lore Circle of Spirit at the end of this book.

I indicate my thanks to the Elder Magi for looking after my Sommerswerd for me, and return it to its scabbard at my side, handing over the Dagger of Vashna for safekeeping.

The Senate of Tahou has voted that I can take anything I want from their stores, since I saved their city and so on.

Oh, did I say ‘anything’? Nope.  I might get the metaphorical ‘key to the city’, but they still won’t let me take more than 10 (!) Gold Crowns and only five (!!)  items from a very limited list (!).

I put my Receipt, Sacks of Silver and Invitation into storage, and take the following :

  • Potion of Laumspur (+4 Endurance).
  • Potion of Alether (+2 Combat Skill for one combat).
  • One Meal

My new Magnakai rank is ‘Mentora’ (!) and it gives me the following improvements to Disciplines :

  • Weaponmastery – additional +2 to all missile weapons, whether Bows, Daggers or otherwise.  If I read this right, I get a total of +8 (!!) to all checks when using my MEGABOW!

giphy24

Pathmanship – I can cross any terrain without leaving tracks, even snow (!) (that is becoming EXTREMELY Avenger-esque)

Psi-Screen – Greater ability to protect myself from incorporeal spirits and other things which attack with psychic energy

Divination – An ability to detect past events at certain locations by ‘reading’ the psychic residue left by significant happenings.

Before I begin, the stingy Senate hands over a map of the area surrounding Torgar.

Project Aon link – Map of Torgar and surrounds.

I was going to give a description of pargraph 1, but then saw what a massive info-dump it was, so that’s a problem for a couple of days’ time.

Oh yeah –

One. More. Thing.

  1. Hi Tim! 1 you have to choose how much gold Elzian is going to give you for this mission! 2 why don t you take with you the physic ring?? In the last reincarnation it was mandatory to find it because of the fight against the PSI-ghoul!

  2. Well, you don’t need to worry about the Elder Magi’s stinginess too much because I think the next book where you’ll have an opportunity to spend any decent amount of gold is Book 18 🙂

Separately, The Dungeons of Torgar is quite possibly my favorite Lone Wolf book. There are three totally different paths through the book, so it has really good replay value. It’s right at the sweet spot in Joe’s writing. He had already developed as a writer and built a lot of detail into Magnamund, but he was still providing the reader with meaningful choices. Later on he’s mostly about telling a story with some battles and RN checks thrown in, and the most meaningful choice you get to make is your choice of skills.

    1. Agree about the different paths, although two were of most interest to me. The problem I’d have is that I’d be trying to play an epic story throughout and I couldn’t decide which route was the more epic. Our Author has a habit in the way he makes choices, it will be “interesting” to see how it works out for him here (being vague to avoid spoilers). I’m almost hoping he has a death or two to give us more of the book.

  3. Congrats to Hawthorn on their win, and the awesomely-named Jarryd Roughead on his clutch play and beating cancer. It reminds me of how a player from my football, Eric Berry, beat Hodgkin’s lymphoma and regained his status as an elite NFL safety. And though it’s usually the shapely legs of women that get my attention, I gotta admit, those guys are sporting some impressive gams.

  4. Re the title, “Dungeons” doesn’t give you even a slight chill? Point taken re “Torgar” though, although at the time those of us what knew Giak (NERD ALERT! NERD ALERT! ALL COMMUNICATION CENSORED UNTIL NERD LEVELS DECLINE TO ACCEPTABLE LEVEL) Pakistan is anyone’s guess.*

Have only seen Rose Byrne in 28 Weeks Later, she was totally the role she was playing. But I remain loyal to Ms Delpy.

And sure Torgar is probably a trap, but so was Castle Death and even the Island it was on doesn’t exist (Lone Wolf, fatal to Sidekicks and Geography since 1984).

Should point out that Tahou was also a victim of Lone Wolf’s presence so whinging about him only getting limited items from the Senate when the cities Widows and Orphans fund is bankrupt is a bit much (Don’t you know there’s a war on???)

At least your sack of silver is finally safe. Roll on the streams of exposition.

  5. This is probably my favourite Lone Wolf, for all the reasons justsomeguy mentioned above. All of the paths are fun, but nothing tops the Battle of Cetza.

    1. Yes, I agree the whole Battle of Cetza is brilliant, potentially lethal but brilliant, but I always wonder about the danger you can uncover on another route and Aussiesmurf has Divination allowing lots and lots of exposition. (I’m unsure how much he knows of whats coming and don’t want to possibly ruin future jokes by engaging in spoilers,).

To me its like in Overlord, will you possibly rescue an Elven Lady from the Temple of Nullaq or will you save a mighty hero’s only son? I can hang in agonizing indecision fot ages on that one.

      1. @Nathan. Apologies, only just saw your comment. Yes. Its good to mess up evil goddesses sacrificial rites (and to feel that you’re rescuing damsels in distress, even if said damsels could be hundreds or thousands of years old, bear in mind that like all my dates all she does is pronounce the title of doom upon you (FRIEND!!!) and then kicks you out of the house).

On the other hand its also good to help save the lives of hero’s sons. Especially since said son’s will probably be expected to carry on the “war against dragons” when said hero is old or dead (whichever comes first).

So, nope, I still can’t decide the best choice. Out of curiousity, what would you consider the best route?

  6. The best route might very well be not to save any of them, walking across the mountain to the shore, then sailing to the Fang of Nadir and avoiding both the Nullaq temple and Haven of Tor. You can get the elven boat just by saying sensible things to Galanwiel, and your chances of survival are the same as they would if you had saved Paladin’s son (no amulet of Nullaq). They are lower than if you had saved the elven girl, but since you didn’t pick up the Amulet, your Inner Force stays at 5 for the next
    books.
