Aside : Lone Wolf has obviously visited the hairdresser, going for a darker shade since Book 1 :
There is no real ‘Story So Far’ here, since the adventure starts immediately upon the conclusion of the Dungeons of Torgar.
In summary, Lone Wolf has fallen through a trans-dimensional portal into the Daziarn, the Magnamund equivalent of the Phantom Zone.
From a practical standpoint, this means that there is no opportunity to get new items, or to retrieve old items from safekeeping. Rather than having my artificial limit of 5/6 new items, Lone Wolf starts this adventure with exactly the same Backpack Items / Special Items as he finished the last book.
I guess there’s not much of a chance of needing Gold Crowns in a parallel universe, anyway.
In one pleasing development, since I managed to grab a Lorestone at the end of the last adventure, Lone Wolf’s Endurance is restored to its maximum level, and he can pick a new Magnakai Discipline.
No real suspense in this decision, as I choose Psi-Surge, both for the ability to increase my Combat Skill in difficult fights, and, more importantly, to complete the Lore-Circle of the Spirit.
This Lore-Circle gives me a significant bonus of +3 to my ‘base’ levels of both Combat Skill and Endurance.
For my added Weaponmastery, I pick….I don’t know, Warhammer, thinking wistfully of those people who are devotees of that game.
My new Magnakai rank is ‘Scion-Kai’, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, as the dictionary definition of ‘scion’ is a man of woman who is a descendant of a noble family.
On a more hopeful note, let’s check out those Magnakai Disciplines which improve with my new rank….
Weaponmastery – My bonus increases to +4 (rather than +3), and when unarmed I only need to reduce my Combat Skill by 1 point instead of 2.
Invisibility – I can ‘alter [my] physical appearance at will in order to deceive an enemy’.
Aside : Naturally, I therefore promptly alter my physical appearance to look like this :

The duration and effectiveness of this change increases as I rise in Magnakai rank, so I assume that the ‘Hugh Jackman’ look is only attainable at a higher level.
Pathsmanship – I can now converse with any ‘sentient creature’, which means that I still won’t be able to understand what Donald Trump is saying.
Psi-screen – If engaged in psychic combat, I can ‘absorb and control’ energies directed at me, which means I can reduce damage suffered by me, and / or increase the potency of my own psychic attacks.
Divination – I am apparently now able to leave my body in a state of ‘suspended animation’ and ‘spirit walk’ through the immediate surroundings. Hopefully I won’t bump into Avenger and the Grandmaster of the Dawn during my spiritual travels. It is noted that while ‘spirit-walking’, my physical body is defenceless.
Hilariously, the final section of the background has the usual palaver about being able to complete the adventure no matter how low your initial ability scores are. There is then an AWESOME Project Aon footnote, which states matter-of-factly that :
“Due to several unavoidable, difficult combats in this book, it is practically impossible for a new or average character to complete this adventure successfully. Even a character with optimal choices of equipment and Disciplines and the highest possible scores for COMBAT SKILL and ENDURANCE will have a difficult time with this adventure.”
That is…..a refreshing piece of honesty, given the blatant lying that some breathtakingly difficult gamebooks indulge in with regard to the chances of success.
