The Prisoners of Time

The Prisoners of Time – Background

Aside : Lone Wolf has obviously visited the hairdresser, going for a darker shade since Book 1 :

There is no real ‘Story So Far’ here, since the adventure starts immediately upon the conclusion of the Dungeons of Torgar.

In summary, Lone Wolf has fallen through a trans-dimensional portal into the Daziarn, the Magnamund equivalent of the Phantom Zone.

From a practical standpoint, this means that there is no opportunity to get new items, or to retrieve old items from safekeeping.  Rather than having my artificial limit of 5/6 new items, Lone Wolf starts this adventure with exactly the same Backpack Items / Special Items as he finished the last book.

I guess there’s not much of a chance of needing Gold Crowns in a parallel universe, anyway.

In one pleasing development, since I managed to grab a Lorestone at the end of the last adventure, Lone Wolf’s Endurance is restored to its maximum level, and he can pick a new Magnakai Discipline.

No real suspense in this decision, as I choose Psi-Surge, both for the ability to increase my Combat Skill in difficult fights, and, more importantly, to complete the Lore-Circle of the Spirit.

This Lore-Circle gives me a significant bonus of +3 to my ‘base’ levels of both Combat Skill and Endurance.

For my added Weaponmastery, I pick….I don’t know, Warhammer, thinking wistfully of those people who are devotees of that game.

My new Magnakai rank is ‘Scion-Kai’, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, as the dictionary definition of ‘scion’ is a man of woman who is a descendant of a noble family.

On a more hopeful note, let’s check out those Magnakai Disciplines which improve with my new rank….

Weaponmastery – My bonus increases to +4 (rather than +3), and when unarmed I only need to reduce my Combat Skill by 1 point instead of 2.

Invisibility – I can ‘alter [my] physical appearance at will in order to deceive an enemy’.

Aside : Naturally, I therefore promptly alter my physical appearance to look like this :

As you do.

The duration and effectiveness of this change increases as I rise in Magnakai rank, so I assume that the ‘Hugh Jackman’ look is only attainable at a higher level.

Pathsmanship – I can now converse with any ‘sentient creature’, which means that I still won’t be able to understand what Donald Trump is saying.

Psi-screen – If engaged in psychic combat, I can ‘absorb and control’ energies directed at me, which means I can reduce damage suffered by me, and / or increase the potency of my own psychic attacks.

Divination – I am apparently now able to leave my body in a state of ‘suspended animation’ and ‘spirit walk’ through the immediate surroundings.  Hopefully I won’t bump into Avenger and the Grandmaster of the Dawn during my spiritual travels.  It is noted that while ‘spirit-walking’, my physical body is defenceless.

Hilariously, the final section of the background has the usual palaver about being able to complete the adventure no matter how low your initial ability scores are.  There is then an AWESOME Project Aon footnote, which states matter-of-factly that :

“Due to several unavoidable, difficult combats in this book, it is practically impossible for a new or average character to complete this adventure successfully. Even a character with optimal choices of equipment and Disciplines and the highest possible scores for COMBAT SKILL and ENDURANCE will have a difficult time with this adventure.”

That is…..a refreshing piece of honesty, given the blatant lying that some breathtakingly difficult gamebooks indulge in with regard to the chances of success.

Next – the adventure proper starts, with some reader-sourced choices!

Confirming details of the JUNE FUNDRAISER :

As many of you may (or may not) have noticed, this humble blog has a ‘buy now’ button on the lower right-hand side.  This is for those who wish to make a financial acknowledgement of the work that goes into preparing 15,000+ words of gamebook goodness every month.

Any funds received will be used for the simple purpose of buying books, and particularly gamebooks.

There is the capacity to make both one-off and recurring donations, and, to make things a little more interesting, for this month of June I’m going to proclaim the following rewards :

Make any donation – Get namechecked in the blog, with thanks.

$5.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked and have me plug, on this blog, a web-page (including your own) of your choice (On the basis that same is not obscene or NSFW)

$20.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked, get the web-page plug, and have the responsibility for making a choice at some point during the playthrough of the current book.

$50.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked, get the web-page plug, have a choice in the book, and pick one of the Grand Master Disciplines at the start of Book 13 (if I get that far).

The above message will be placed at the bottom of each post for this delightfully freezing (in Melbourne) month of June…

  1. Well, someone has to audit your inventory, so I feel the need to point out that you currently have the Sommerswerd both on your person and in storage, and you have the Dagger of Vashna not at all. I don’t think even Lone Wolf could morph the Dagger of Vashna into a second Sommerswerd.

Also, even more impressive than Lone Wolf’s hair color change is the fact that he was apparently able to summon his Kai tunic from another dimension just to pose for the cover art. In the Equipment section for the book it specifically says, “You are dressed in the grey tunic of an Eruan Pathfinder.” I wonder which advanced discipline lets you summon your Kai cloak from anywhere.

    1. Do Eruan Pathfinders wear those ridiculously tight pants, or is that a staple of Lone Wolf’s wardrobe? I think I see Lone Wolf packing a Special Item that you forgot to list…

At first I thought it would suck to be a monk with the ability to change your appearance to shirtless Ryan Gosling. What a waste! But I shouldn’t assume all monks take vows of chastity. I can now imagine Kai monks putting on their Gosling and Delpy guises to seduce the locals. Reminds me of that temple in Way of the Tiger apparently dedicated to a sex god, where we could hear sounds of ecstasy coming from inside…

U.S.A. vs Australia! Gosling vs. Jackman! In a hot-dude-off for the ages! Too close to call…

  2. Scion-Kai possibly makes more sense than Savant. Sommlending in general, and Kai Lords specifically, are meant to be descended from Kai. Maybe when you reach Scion its like being acknowledged as such. But I viewed at a sort of “You’re worthy to be counted as a true child of Kai”, willingness to suspend all traces of disbelief an advantage to finding the name cool (I DIDN’T proudly tell my mum I was now a Scion-Kai, I’d learned from Savant).

Invisibility: the purpose of the Kai Magnakai etc skills are to enable you to defend the Universe from the deprivations of Naar and his twisted creations, NOT to impress your wife. But no jury would ever convict you.

Spirit Walking: The real question is will Lone Wolf also become a young woman? At least there would then be one serious female character in the series, even if she is secretly a he.

Here’s hoping Readers Contributions don’t kill you.
