The Prisoners of Time

The Prisoners of Time – Attempt 1, Part 2

When Lone Wolf woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.

Oops, sorry.

Wrong piece of literature.

Having said that, Lone Wolf’s position upon awakening isn’t that much better, what with being in the middle of a mystical ‘corridor’ between dimensions, with no known exit back to his home.

And then, just to make things a little more interesting….

I’m drawn outside of my makeshift shelter by the ominous flap of wings.  When outside, I see two groups of creatures, with no immediate hint as to which of the two are the ‘goodies’ :

  • Half a dozen dragon-esque creatures, each bearing as a rider a large golden-skinned figure of human appearance, if not size.
  • A group of huge lizard-like creatures, fleeing across the desert, while being apparently hunted by the flying monsters.

As the leading lizard (!) heads towards the cairn, one of the golden-skinned humanoids spots me, and lands nearby.

I can only say…

My Pathmanship mastery comes to the fore, as I can decipher the initial questions of the leader (and two of his followers, who have landed with him).

And for those commenters who shrugged off the grave-robbing of Lone Wolf in my previous post, let me just note that the VERY FIRST thing to come out of his mouth is a demand for an explanation as to why I’ve violated the tomb of Ztuul, ‘one of their most revered hunters’.

With the only options being ‘telling the unvarnished truth’ and ‘staying silent’, I can’t imagine that saying nothing will be viewed as friendly, particularly given my current position.

Upon hearing my story of ‘Kai Lord’, ‘Shadow Gate’ and so forth, they initially appear sceptical, but are fascinated by my ‘appearance’ and the ‘sound of my voice’.

I just KNEW my Magnakai ‘quick change’ would be helpful!

In an epic series of name drops, they mention that they are the ‘Yoacor’, the ‘Lords of Yanis’ (the Shining City) and masters of the ‘Abaxial of Czenos’.

If there is a test later on that series of names I am going to be SO SCREWED.

They decide to take me to the Beholder at their home base, who will judge my story.

Hopefully it isn’t this guy.

I hitch a ride on one of the dragon-like creatures, and we fly for so long that I fall asleep on two separate occasions, with no indication that my mount requires food, drink or sleep during the flight.

We then pass through a narrow cleft between two mountains, before emerging in front of a crater within which lies a ‘beautiful city’.

Project Aon link – City of Yanis

We land at the citadel, and I am escorted to a room in the watchtower, where my escort telepathically (!!) tells me to wait while the ‘Beholder’ is told of my coming.

I walk into the (indicated) adjoining room, finding food (on a table, ready for eating) along with a divan.

I can’t see any reason why they’d want to take me all this way only to poison me, so I tuck in to the offered meal (gaining 3 unneeded Endurance) and there is enough left over to take 1 Meal with me, which I do.

After sleeping, I am escorted to the Beholder, and Lone Wolf (but not your writer) is shocked by the appearance of someone obviously high in intellect rather than physical ability.

Project Aon link – Beholder in arms of escort

He dismisses the other locals, and my skill of Divination confirms that, like Yoda, he is a being of immense power.

He escorts to a classic ‘man-cave’, what with the steel floor and so-on, and (not so) modestly mentions that he has seen me arrive in the Daziarn, and that if it wasn’t for his men, I’d be dead by now.

Aside : This exposition JUST KEEPS GOING ON.  And it burns up paragraphs that could have been used for the ‘game’ part of ‘gamebook’.

Bullet points :

  • His realm is, in the universe, between the planes of Fire and Water.

Project Aon link – Mystical map with Beholder’s realm

  • The Beholder scans my mind and approves, saying that I must leave his city (since many are hunting me, but that he will help me as best he can.
  • He obviously didn’t check out every image that goes through Lone Wolf’s mind.

  • The Beholder uses some plot-device voodoo to calculate that the two Lorestones, which passed through the Shadow Gate ahead of me, landed in the area known as ‘Khat Trisect of Vhozada’ (!), where a person of assistance known as Serocca resides.
  • He indicates a ‘Dimension Door’ which will take me to the relevant area.
  • I step through, and the journey costs me 3 Endurance.

Aside : At the rate of non-choice paragraphs in this book, I should get that back in no time!

I emerge at an area reminiscent of my home in Sommerlund, what with the grassland, streams, birdsong and so forth.  All we need is Badger and Water-Rat drifting by on one of their boats.

Using my Huntmastery-based skills, I scan the horizon, and see some pyramid-shaped stone structures that may be evidence of habitation.

I follow a stream in that direction before noting a thicket of trees around a pale. grey, metallic monolith.

Everytime I hear the words ‘monolith’, I think of this….doesn’t everyone?

Naturally, I investigate it, because of course I do.  Noting foliage around the monolith, which indicates the structure has been there for some time, I also hear a humming from deep underground.

Meanwhile, my Pathmanship alerts me to the possibility of an ambush.  I ready myself for a confrontation!

A group of ‘hairy, squat-limbed creatures’ enter the clearing, which makes me doubly certain that Joe Dever had seen the 2001 movie right before he wrote this section.

Their leader utters some sounds which, once more, my Pathmanship can decipher.

He asks if I come from ‘Meledor’, and the tone says that ‘Yes’ is the hoped-for answer.

To tell the truth, or no?

I have made my decision, but the curious among you will have to wait.

Aside : I know this entry wasn’t that interesting but, seriously, Joe Dever gave me NOTHING to work with – it was all very po-faced world-building, with hardly a game component to be found – I don’t think I made a single R10 check!

Confirming details of the JUNE FUNDRAISER :

As many of you may (or may not) have noticed, this humble blog has a ‘buy now’ button on the lower right-hand side.  This is for those who wish to make a financial acknowledgement of the work that goes into preparing 15,000+ words of gamebook goodness every month.

Any funds received will be used for the simple purpose of buying books, and particularly gamebooks.

There is the capacity to make both one-off and recurring donations, and, to make things a little more interesting, for this month of June I’m going to proclaim the following rewards :

Make any donation – Get namechecked in the blog, with thanks.

$5.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked and have me plug, on this blog, a web-page (including your own) of your choice (On the basis that same is not obscene or NSFW)

$20.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked, get the web-page plug, and have the responsibility for making a choice at some point during the playthrough of the current book.

$50.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked, get the web-page plug, have a choice in the book, and pick one of the Grand Master Disciplines at the start of Book 13 (if I get that far).

The above message will be placed at the bottom of each post for this delightfully freezing (in Melbourne) month of June…

  1. Again the correct choice of disciplines made it boring for you. If you hadn’t had Pathsmanship for talking to the Yoacor, you would have gotten in some serious trouble as a grave robber and would’ve had to roll an R10 to avoid an instadeath. And if you’d survived the instadeath roll you would’ve wound up in a battle.

Also, how are you handling the Kai Healing discipline? If you had Curing I would think you could use it to heal damage from Shadow Gates and other dimensional doors, but I’m surprised you’re using Healing that way.

    1. I was about to make the same point about Healing. While a sufficiently devious player might manage to spin the Endurance lost travelling through the Shadow Gate as combat damage (it resulted from an attack by Gnaag, right?), I don’t see how the points lost in the Dimension Door can qualify.

  2. “Wrong piece of literature”

Hmm, in Background you ‘thought wistfully’ of your readers who are devotee’s of Warhammer but in that millieu waking up as a ‘monstrous vermin’ is a very real danger. Even in Lone Wolf it’s a bit too believable. In the real world however I know that most mornings I wake as an enourmous bloated slug 😥

Asking life can things get worse is ALWAYS taken as a challenge. Generally life wins.

“for those commenters who shrugged off the grave-robbing of Lone Wolf in my previous post,”
Ah, um, yes, well, I point out that not only did you get a free ride out of it but you also got to KEEP said Silver Rod. So there! I don’t think its of ANY use at all mind you, but I do remember how long you carried around that sack of silver…

And just 5 minutes ago I was reading T-Man saying in The Cauldron of Fear “I approve of Ryan Gosling memes to balance out the Julie Delpy glamour shots.” Just need to change the beauty’s name.

Irrelevant aside, after posting the above quote I thought to myself, “What the hell is a glamour shot anyway”. After all, if I don’t know then I’m just exposing myself to (even more) public ridicule by using the term. Came across an article and picked out two bits from it:

“is glamour charming? In my opinion, it definitely is. To me, being charming is having an appealing sense of friendliness, confidence and a sense of humor. The latter being the key element in glamour…glamour has to always have a small sense of humor in order for it to work”.

“To me, glamour modeling is about seducing the camera. A good glamour model commands attention or a jaw drop with her goddess like qualities and confidence”

Or in Ryan Gosling’s case “godlike”. So I’d adjust T-Man’s comment to “I approve of Ryan Gosling glamour shots to balance out the Julie Delpy and Rose Byrne glamour shots’. Just please please please don’t start using Donald Trump Glamour Shots!!!! 😱😱😱 My sincerest apologies to anyone who read this irrelevant aside.

I was surprised you included so much of the exposition. While I remember much of it even I’d just speed through this part. But I must comment:

    1) you say The Beholder didn’t see THAT photo WHICH distracted me much longer that it should have but after he scan’s your mind it says “a smile spreads slowly across his withered grey face.” and after that he says “I perceive much in your character that pleases me, human”. Yeah, Character, right! And we know how sincere most men are when they say they like a girl for her “personality”. He saw Rose Byrne and it pleased him. Still, they do say that beauty is in the eye of The …

    2) He claims “I will not tolerate the weak and untrustworthy in my realm.” but when he see’s you’ve got enemies its suddenly “For this reason you must leave Yanis.” Uh huh. You know, I didn’t like him as a teenager and I like him even less now.

And finally, after more exposition, you leave us with a cliffhanger. Now there were opportunities for fights and flights in today’s episode (plus you could have gone for a spirit walk no less). But you continue to make wise choices and so have to pay the penalty.

Roll on … hopefully not so much exposition.

    1. Re: the Silver Rod, see my previous post. If Tim didn’t have Pathsmanship or had chosen not to respond to their question, they would have noticed the Silver Rod and would have been nonplussed, to put it lightly. But yes, thanks to his fast talking he’s now gotten a totally useless item for free.

      1. You’re right. This raises the dubious morality that grave robbing is ok if you can talk fast enough. Don’t think anyone here is going to support that. Joe Dever may have been leaving a trap for the more magpie like readers.

Still remember in Talisman of Death where your best chance of surviving the final fight was to be a grave robber. By contrast in Morrowind I was happily raiding every tomb I came across until I was up in the hierarchy and I started to realise I was stealing from the families of my subjects…

  3. MJS (or rather, extraplanar judicial system) ranking is now :

    Eru > Anari > Kazan-Oud > Vassagonia > Sommerlund > Dessi > Zhamin Plateau > Giak

Because they let you do grave-robbing if you have a charming voice and if you don’t, you just have to kill the police officer to… be inducted in the police. It wouldn’t fly even in Elzian.
