The Prisoners of Time

The Prisoners of Time – Attempt 1, Part 3

Aside : Before returning to Lone Wolf’s attempt to communicate with the Ookor (!?), I should address some feedback received in the comments to the previous post.

It was, quite reasonably mentioned that the damage suffered by Lone Wolf through this adventure so far was of a non-wound nature, and therefore not able to be recovered through use of the basic Healing Kai Discipline (whereas if I possessed the Magnakai Discipline of Curing all damage of any kind can be restored).

Therefore, after review of the text, I confirm that Lone Wolf has suffered a total of (9+3+1) = 13 points of psychic damage, while only recovering 3 points due to the restorative meal at the Beholder’s citadel.

My current Endurance is therefore 34-10=24.

In the Daziarn.

With no immediate prospect of escape.

With many of my country’s supervillains freely wandering the landscape.

Back to my current predicament, I must now decide whether to lie and tell these Ookor fellas what they want to hear.

Given that a truthful approach has worked for me previously, and also because I know nothing whatsoever about this ‘Meledor’ place, I admit that I am, in fact, not from there.

And yes, I have actually now used Katherine Heigl in this blog.  I have no shame.

The Ookor initially seem concerned and defensive at my ‘no’ answer and, in an attempt to improve matters, I ‘casually’ mention that I am seeking Serocca, and they are somewhat mollified, advising that they will take me to her.

Name dropping for the win!

I trek with them for several hours, and I consider it acceptable this time for my Huntmastery to obviate the need for a Meal..

I am led down to a guarded gate and, when the word spreads that my escorts have returned from their patrol, a crowd gathers around me, chattering excitedly.

I finally have an insight as to how certain famous actors must feel on the red carpet.

YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT DON’T YOU ROSE.

*coughs*

The crush of the crowd (and not my crush on certain performers) as I am escorted to Serocca’s residence, is so intense that I actually lose 2 Endurance points.

Serocca greets me by name (!!), and my Psi-Screen helps me understand that she is subject to a psychic barrier which is specifically and individually tuned to her.  People like myself can enter or leave at will, but she is trapped.  Cheerfully, I am also informed that I can somehow sense that if she did, in fact, attempt to leave, the resulting explosion would destroy the entire city.

Possible Chekhov’s Gun, anyone?

Serocca is some kind of lion / woman hybrid (?!) a fact which doesn’t seem to provoke a whole lot of comment.

Project Aon link – Serocca

If you ask me, she’s a character from He-Man / She-Ra just WAITING to happen.

She goes on INTERMINABLY with guff about how I am a chosen one, and it is incumbent on me to save the world, and maybe the universe etc etc.

I KNEW that stray tree branch at the start of Book 1 was no accident!

Aside : If you’ve read the oh-so-serious Legends of Lone Wolf novels, they retcon that scene to say that the tree branch was, in fact, placed there deliberately by a demi-god called Alyss to save Lone Wolf from the massacre of the Kai.

I intensely DISLIKE this prophetic ‘chosen’ one stuff.  What’s wrong with an otherwise ordinary individual achieving greatness through skill, courage, daring and honest intent?

Anyway.

There follows some INTENSE exposition about how there is some kind of intense battle raging, and someone called the ‘Chaos-Master’ is wreaking havoc among the various realms.

When the devastation of a place called Guakor is mentioned, Serocca starts crying, so I naturally ask what troubles her.

Yeah…..Lone Wolf has NO tact.

I then get a classic boy / girl story as Serocca states that :

  • A great warrior called Sinay loved her, but she rejected him.
  • He made a deal with the Chaos-Master to make her fall for him (‘him’ being Sinay)
  • It worked, to the extent that Serocca fell in love with Sinay…

Aside : Why does this classic Peanuts comic suddenly spring to mind  at this point of the story?

peanuts

  • Sure enough, on the wedding day, the Chaos-Master demanded half of Sinay’s kingdom in return for the whole mind-control thing
  • I have no idea how that whole bargain was meant to work.  Did Sinay agree to the Chaos-Master’s help in return for ‘favour to be named later’?  Talk about a sucker deal!
  • In a stunning twist, Serocca was imprisoned, while Sinay was deformed until he became….
  • The Beholder!

What a twist!

Second only to this :

In an actual bit of practical help, Serocca confirms the location of the Lorestones as Nahgoth Forest, close to the border with Meledor. Apparently they are several hundred yards of Tolakos, the ancient burial ground of the Meledorians.

The bad news is that this area is currently (naturally) the site of a pitched battle between the Melodorians and the Chaos-Master.

In even more interesting news, she confirms the existence of another Shadow Gate – in the abandoned city of Haagadar.

Apparently, I can counter the ‘one-way’ nature of the Shadow Gate by possessing the Lorestones, which serve as a type of ‘Cosmic Key’ to allow a return to Sommerlund.

She gives me a map (Special Item, for which I drop the silly Silver Rod) and promises to arrange travel for me to Tolakos.

In a gesture which makes her a contender for ‘most helpful person in the history of Lone Wolf’, she shows me to a room where the combination of food and rest restored my Endurance to my Initial level!

Finally, she gives me an Obsidian Seal, which will identify me to the Melodorian forces, and to their leader Lorkon Ironheart.  She has apparently given Ironheart psychic notice of my imminent arrival.

I prepare for my departure, around the time of my next post!

Confirming details of the JUNE FUNDRAISER :

As many of you may (or may not) have noticed, this humble blog has a ‘buy now’ button on the lower right-hand side.  This is for those who wish to make a financial acknowledgement of the work that goes into preparing 15,000+ words of gamebook goodness every month.

Any funds received will be used for the simple purpose of buying books, and particularly gamebooks.

There is the capacity to make both one-off and recurring donations, and, to make things a little more interesting, for this month of June I’m going to proclaim the following rewards :

Make any donation – Get namechecked in the blog, with thanks.

$5.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked and have me plug, on this blog, a web-page (including your own) of your choice (On the basis that same is not obscene or NSFW)

$20.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked, get the web-page plug, and have the responsibility for making a choice at some point during the playthrough of the current book.

$50.00 (Aus) or more – Get namechecked, get the web-page plug, have a choice in the book, and pick one of the Grand Master Disciplines at the start of Book 13 (if I get that far).

The above message will be placed at the bottom of each post for this delightfully freezing (in Melbourne) month of June…

  1. They turned Lone Wolf into Fry from Futurama (don’t care that Futurama came later)? So who was his Nibbler? And who’s the Magnamund version of Zapp Brannigan?

      1. Prince Ewevin felt a direct asssult on the City gates was so stupid the Varettan’s would never expect it.

Miraculously the Mercenary Captain and his men survived but only so Joe Dever could say they were wiped out during the Darklord invasion.

  2. Name dropping only works when people are being unreasonable. Since people are frequently unreasonable we need to drop names. We live in a strange world but you’ve gotta live by the rules.

Don’t think much of your “escorts” for letting you be gang prodded by the mob, but they’re probably not used to major celebrities visiting town. Serocca on the other hand is unlikely to be an actual hybrid but more likely a distinct humanoid species (or sub species given the later revelation). I was 17 when this book came out, I was very fascinated by her, moving on hurriedly.

You’ve accused Lone Wolf before of being rude for asking women (Jungle of horrors also for example) why they’re upset but as we’re martied men we KNOW women enjoy talking about all the problems in their lives. It leaves them happier and us severly traumatised, frequently mentally scarred for life. As Joe Dever was also married this may have counted as his giving us marriage guidance.

“Prophetic chosen ones and ordinary individuals”
Firstly Lander AKA Silent Wolf AKA Lone Wolf isn’t an ordinary individual. He was born with uncommon traits that allowed him to be trained as a Kai Lord and to keep on rising.
Second, even with these traits whats marks him out is the qualities he chooses to display including courage and determination. (We’ve all seen people who had the abilities but wouldn’t use them, they’ll come out with gumpf like “I don’t feel motivated” or “Why should I if I’m not appreciated”).
Third, the Prophecies are also part of a long term war with strategic decisions being made centuries or millenia in advance. The fact that it was understood there’d be a point where an assault on the Kai Lords was successful doesn’t remove the onus on the survivor to step up to the challenge.

Lone Wolf is the one fulfilling prophecy because the person he chooses to be is the sort who’ll fulfil the propecy. Basically I see the truth as lying somewhere between what you hate and what you’d prefer… that sums up a lot of life actually. ..

And no comment on The Beholder being a sleaze who gets a god to drug a woman so she’ll “marry” him and never checking the smallprint before ruining her life and running like the coward he is. Also convenient for him that he gets to send you to strike at his old nemesis, yes, convenient. Didn’t like him at 17 and loath him now. Don’t think Joe Dever liked him either.

And finally, after ten LONG books, Lone Wolf gets led by a hot women to a room with food, a bath and a bed 😉, only to have her go off to browse the Daziarn’s version of the Internet leaving him to “try to relax”. Yet again art resembles real life.

Maybe you’ll get some action in the next post.
