Preliminary aside : Before I say anything else, I was STOKED to notice that one of the blogs that has served as inspiration for this one, My Adventures End Here has, after a long layoff, started updating again. With recent entries on both Avenger! and The Cauldron of Fear, what are you waiting for! Check it out!
Secondary aside : This is a gamebook-heavy post, lengthy but with fewer pop-culture jokes.
Back to Lone Wolf, who was confronted by a door puzzle that didn’t seem to admit of a logical solution.
After examining all of the valued contributions from my commenters, I will go with the suggestion that the lines and triangle accumulate to equal a square, so….answer B!
My answer registers correctly, and the door opens to lead into a long dark corridor. After closing the door to keep the ravening hordes outside, I dash down the corridor and reach the central chamber, whether the remains of (presumably) Baylon are stored in an ornate sarcophagus.
There is also a portal in the ceiling leading to the roof, but I ignore that for the time being and search the chamber, before investigating the sarcophagus.
Oh, I’m sorry. After investigating the chamber generally, the book DOESN’T LET YOU THEN SEARCH THE SARCOPHAGUS but rather insists on you immediately moving upwards to the roof.
You said it, Merida
Aside : Prior to meeting my lovely wife, I always had a weakness for redheads – Shirley Manson, Alicia Witt, Julianne Moore and of course :
Anyhoo, I (with gritted teeth) make it out to the roof without check the sarcophagus for LOOT, and once more have to confront the Chaos-Master, armed with nothing but a MEGASWORD.
Just as a reminder, after using Psi-Surge and my potion of Alether, my stats for this battle are :
Lone Wolf – CS : 44, E : 34
And my opponent :
Chaos-Master (CM) – CS 44, E : 62
Round 1 :
R10 of 4
LW : 34-3-2=29, CM : 62-6=56
Round 2 :
R10 of 6
LW : 29-2-2=25, CM : 56-8=48
R10 of 5
LW : 25-2-2=21. CM : 48-7=41
R10 of 5 (again?!)
LW : 21-2-2=17. CM : 41-7=34
R10 of 6 (sigh)
LW : 17-2-2=13, CM : 34-8=26
Looking pretty desperate, to say the least.
An R10 of 0 (!!) gives me a little hope.
LW : 13-2=11, CM : 26-12=14
I’m not making this up – another R10 of 0!
LW :11-2=9, CM : 14-12=2
[EDITED TO ADD : I actually miscalculated my Endurance losses, so at this point, on review, Lone Wolf actually had 9 Endurance left, rather than 5. However, I’ll leave the following passage in, since I would have won the fight anyhow]
At this point, I realise that my Psi-Surge cannot be used (as my Endurance has dropped below 6). I therefore have to revert to the -4 section of the Combat Results table, but at least I don’t lose 2 Endurance per round.
[Checks Combat Results Table]
As long as I get an R10 check of 4 or more, I will be victorious.
LW : 6-3=3 [Edited : This is actually 9-2-2=5 – See above], CM : 2-8=ROADKILL
Excuse me for a moment, I need to sing along to something.
My victory is once more celebrated by Lorkon Ironheart and his army, and I again accept the offer of an escort by Arke. We trek through the jungle and I pick up another 3 Meals, while dropping my Vial of Gold Dust.
After Arke bids me farewell, I trek across the plains, attempting to hide from the dragon. Needing anything but a 0 to succeed in hiding, I naturally (!!) get a 0, although my follow-up R10 check means that I avoid the fiery breath attack.
With a monster that is immune to Mindblast, I now have to fight a battle that I’d hoped to avoid :
[Gulps 2 Laumspur potions]
Zhengha – CS : 35, E : 42
Lone Wolf – CS : 36, E : 21
I get yet another (!) R10 of 0
Zh – E : 42-14=28, LW 21-0=21
R10 of 7
Zh : 28-10=18, LW : 21-1=20
R10 of 0 (!!!)
Zh : 18-14=4, LW : 20-0=20
I’m glad I have already secured my reputation for honesty, because I get ANOTHER R10 of 0!!
So after all that worry, I actually manage to polish the dragon off for the loss of only 1 (!!) Endurance point!
In less fun news, I now need to face off (again) against the Shadow Reavers. My Healing has restored my Endurance back to 23, so the stats for this combat are :
Shadow Reavers – CS : 25, E : 40
Lone Wolf (psychic power) – CS : 32, E : 23
I won’t go through the whole combat, but I manage to knock off the Reavers for the loss of only another 3 Endurance points.
I then walk again into the golden light, but get another average (to say the least) check on my restored Endurance, getting only 3.
However, there are another 16 paragraphs between the combat with the Shadow Reavers and the confrontation with the ‘Villains of Sommerlund’. meaning that my Endurance has been restored to 20+3+16 = maximum of 34.
Villains of Sommerlund – CS : 38, E : 46
Lone Wolf – CS : 38, E : 34
R10 of 4 (oh boy, here we go)
LW : 34-3=31. VoS : 46-6=40
R10 of 5
LW : 31-2=29, VoS : 40-7=33
R10 of 7
LW : 29-1=28, VoS : 33-9=24
R10 of 5
LW : 28-2=26, VoS : 24-7=17
R10 of 7
LW : 26-1=25, VoS : 17-9=8
Another R10 of 7!
LW :25-1=24, VoS : 7-9=Sentenced to death!
I face my last enemy!
Vonotar grabs a box containing the last Lorestone, before turning to face me!
His ‘ring of blue fire’ shoots a jet of blue flame at me and, as I lose 5 Endurance points, I once more lament the fact that Mr Dever seems to have again forgotten that the Sommerswerd is meant to grant immunity to magic and, indeed, all the way back in Book 2, actually prevented Vonotar using a similiar tactic against me!
Vonotar is immune to both Mindblast and Psi-Surge
I gird my loins for the final battle of this legendarily difficult book :
Lone Wolf – CS : 36, E : 19
Vonotar (with Power Ring) – CS : 30, E : 21.
R10 of 7!
LW – 19-0=19, V – 21-12=9
Another R10 of 7!
LW : 19-0=19, V : 9-12=…………….
After being at death’s door against the Chaos-Master, I didn’t think I had even a skerrick of a chance of making it to the end, but…..here I am!
I snaffle the final Lorestone, dive through the Shadow Gate, and emerge triumphant!!
