Before anything else, I must apologise if I am a little off my game today.
You see, in around 4 hours, this film event will be happening for me :
I do not apologise for Star Wars references which may find their way into this instalment!
Carrying on from the end of our last thrilling chapter, I have killed a dragon, and I did it without even having a Dragonlance!
Aside : For those like me who, in their childhood, enjoyed the Dragonlance novels, there’s a great podcast at Dungeons and Dweebs where they pontificate at length on reading the books as adults.
Anyway, I suppose I should get back to Lone Wolf.
Further aside : Given the fact that a whole new generation of Kai Lords are in training, shouldn’t he go back to ‘Silent Wolf’? Hmmmm.
Lone Wolf dashes (or more accurately, gently jogs) to Banedon’s side, only to be confronted by an inpenetrable energy barrier. Before he can get a command crew together to fly to Endor….
I mean, before I can do anything rash, I see that the power is apparently generated from a crystal sphere hovering over Banedon.
I promptly have flashbacks to the end of Book 10, although this time my companion is (slightly) less expendable than Paido…
I have several choices to attempt to disrupt the energy field – I can use my MEGABOW, or break out Kai-Alchemy.
Since my various Bow bonuses tend to mean (almost) certain success, I pick this option over risking another use of Kai-Alchemy.
Sure enough, I only need a 5 or more to get the best possible result, which with my bonuses means that I can’t miss!
My arrow slams into the center of the force-generation crystal, and the energy field dissipates!
Aside : I’m now down to 2 arrows, so I hope the end is near….
I dash to Banedon’s side, but he is ‘deeply’ (?) unconscious and doesn’t respond.
The enemy must have tortured him by making him watch The Phantom Menace scenes featuring Jar Jar Binks over and over and over again….
I perform an impromptu fireman’s carry, and have the option of exiting via the main doors (through which I entered) or a tunnel in the north wall.
Given the fact that there were no obvious exits on my path into this hall, I choose the tunnel!
My choice appears to have some merit when, as I enter the tunnel, I hear a patrol approaching the main doors.
The tunnel leads to another hall lined with ancient stone statues, hopefully not depicting recent American politicians…..
Meanwhile, the book takes care to describe for me the ‘oily stench’ that emanates from the tar-soaked torches, which illuminate the chamber.
I have the choice of attempting to revive Banedon, or continuing on, while carrying him….
Aside : I resist the urge to consider that I’ve been carrying Banedon for about five of the books in which we both appear…..
….and instead try to bring him back to the land of the living.
My basic Kai skills (of Healing) manage to revive him, but it is obvious that he has been starved and beaten during his captivity. He does, though, manage to justify his existence by sending me a telepathic message informing Lone Wolf of a hidden lever next to a statue which opens a secret door.
I pull the lever, open the door and, again shouldering Banedon (!!) make my way down the dark passageway.
In a development that may have mixed consequences, the secret door closes behind me, frustrating my pursuers, but leaving me with limited options if a retreat is necessary.
The secret passageway leads to some kind of twisted laboratory, and Banedon’s telepathy confirms that he suffered ‘fiendish’ tortures here to try to make him divulge his magical secrets.
I can only imagine the form which this torture must have taken….
There is a combination lock guarding the only exit from this room.
I need to figure the number which fits into the blank space.
Do you want a chance to solve it yourself?
This doesn’t seem that hard. Each number doubles across the three locks.
For example, top left – 3, 6, 12. The blank space is therefore 2,4…….and 8!
Sure enough, the door opens and I lug Banedon’s (unhelpful) body through yet another corridor before confronting yet another left-right choice.
Given my left-handed nature, and the absence of other indications of a correct choice, I head left and emerge into an open chamber, full of ropes, pulleys and granite blocks.
A large door is to my left and yes, book, I do possess a Brass Key!
The key fits the lock, the door opens, and I can pass through into the passage beyond!
And by ‘passage beyond’, I mean my next entry!
Pop culture update!
Although bleak, this song by obscure Scandinavian band K’s Choice, is one of the best summaries of addiction I have ever heard :
