The Captives of Kaag

The Captives of Kaag – Attempt 1, Part 10

Before anything else, I must apologise if I am a little off my game today.

You see, in around 4 hours, this film event will be happening for me :

I do not apologise for Star Wars references which may find their way into this instalment!

Carrying on from the end of our last thrilling chapter, I have killed a dragon, and I did it without even having a Dragonlance!

tumblr_owazjips6s1wo6q1so7_500

Aside : For those like me who, in their childhood, enjoyed the Dragonlance novels, there’s a great podcast at Dungeons and Dweebs where they pontificate at length on reading the books as adults.

Anyway, I suppose I should get back to Lone Wolf.

Further aside : Given the fact that a whole new generation of Kai Lords are in training, shouldn’t he go back to ‘Silent Wolf’?  Hmmmm.

Lone Wolf dashes (or more accurately, gently jogs) to Banedon’s side, only to be confronted by an inpenetrable energy barrier.  Before he can get a command crew together to fly to Endor….

tenor8

Ahem.

I mean, before I can do anything rash, I see that the power is apparently generated from a crystal sphere hovering over  Banedon.

I promptly have flashbacks to the end of Book 10, although this time my companion is (slightly) less expendable than Paido…

I have several choices to attempt to disrupt the energy field – I can use my MEGABOW, or break out Kai-Alchemy.

Since my various Bow bonuses tend to mean (almost) certain success, I pick this option over risking another use of Kai-Alchemy.

Sure enough, I only need a 5 or more to get the best possible result, which with my bonuses means that I can’t miss!

giphy-3-1

My arrow slams into the center of the force-generation crystal, and the energy field dissipates!

Aside : I’m now down to 2 arrows, so I hope the end is near….

I dash to Banedon’s side, but he is ‘deeply’ (?) unconscious and doesn’t respond.

The enemy must have tortured him by making him watch The Phantom Menace scenes featuring Jar Jar Binks over and over and over again….

giphy4

I perform an impromptu fireman’s carry, and have the option of exiting via the main doors (through which I entered) or a tunnel in the north wall.

Given the fact that there were no obvious exits on my path into this hall, I choose the tunnel!

My choice appears to have some merit when, as I enter the tunnel, I hear a patrol approaching the main doors.

The tunnel leads to another hall lined with ancient stone statues, hopefully not depicting recent American politicians…..

Meanwhile, the book takes care to describe for me the ‘oily stench’ that emanates from the tar-soaked torches, which illuminate the chamber.

I have the choice of attempting to revive Banedon, or continuing on, while carrying him….

Aside : I resist the urge to consider that I’ve been carrying Banedon for about five of the books in which we both appear…..

dd75ee42d051935b045ffc82071eb855

….and instead try to bring him back to the land of the living.

My basic Kai skills (of Healing) manage to revive him, but it is obvious that he has been starved and beaten during his captivity.  He does, though, manage to justify his existence by sending me a telepathic message informing Lone Wolf of a hidden lever next to a statue which opens a secret door.

I pull the lever, open the door and, again shouldering Banedon (!!) make my way down the dark passageway.

In a development that may have mixed consequences, the secret door closes behind me, frustrating my pursuers, but leaving me with limited options if a retreat is necessary.

The secret passageway leads to some kind of twisted laboratory, and Banedon’s telepathy confirms that he suffered ‘fiendish’ tortures here to try to make him divulge his magical secrets.

I can only imagine the form which this torture must have taken….

NOOOOOOOO!!

Ahem.

There is a combination lock guarding the only exit from this room.

Project Aon link – combination lock problem

I need to figure the number which fits into the blank space.

Do you want a chance to solve it yourself?

SPOILER SPACE

This doesn’t seem that hard.  Each number doubles across the three locks.

For example, top left – 3, 6, 12.  The blank space is therefore 2,4…….and 8!

Sure enough, the door opens and I lug Banedon’s (unhelpful) body through yet another corridor before confronting yet another left-right choice.

Given my left-handed nature, and the absence of other indications of a correct choice, I head left and emerge into an open chamber, full of ropes, pulleys and granite blocks.

A large door is to my left and yes, book, I do possess a Brass Key!

tenor9

The key fits the lock, the door opens, and I can pass through into the passage beyond!

And by ‘passage beyond’, I mean my next entry!

Pop culture update!

Although bleak, this song by obscure Scandinavian band K’s Choice, is one of the best summaries of addiction I have ever heard :

  1. I didn’t even notice the numbers doubled as they moved to the next square. I just saw that the sum of the top two numbers always equaled the sum of the bottom row. Great minds think different.

“Not An Addict” was part of one of my mix tapes where I taped songs off the radio (and any kids reading surely have NO idea what I’m talking about*). This particular section of the mix tape had other alt-rock songs I liked by ’90s bands, like Drugstore’s “Solitary Party Groover”, Porno for Pyros’ “Pets”, and … my limited online search skils (Google-fu?) have failed me. ♫ When you (mumblemumblemumble) and split your head wide open… ♫ … ♫ Well I think we all prayed cause we. Didn’t want it that way ♫, then a chorus of ♫ Well if you’re up front with me, will I be up front with you ♫ (x2). The band name may have had “honey” in it. Help me if you can, you may be my only hope.

    * Funny story: my brother’s taking my niece somewhere and tells her “Sweetie, go get your Walkman!”. “Daddy, what’s a Walkman?” “… your iPod, go get your iPod!”. And one day, when she has kids of her own “Honey, go get your iPod!” “Mommy, what’s an iPod?” “… the implants that allow you do download music directly into your brain, make sure they’re activated!”

Whereas I observed that the two numbers on the left always added up to the top right number, and the bottom right was three times the bottom left every time.

    2. Ah! The old days when you could go into a music store that WASN’T online and buy blank cassette’s. Then sitting with the radio playing ready to leap at a moment’s notice if you recognised the start of a good tune, or what sounded like a good tune. I suffered one disaster where I’d been listening to my tape so far, then jumped to record a good tune and only realised after that I’d overwritten an amazing tune.

I love Google and Youtube for enabling me to listen to my old favourties, whose real names I often never knew. Only a few months ago I was listening to a short-lived retro station in my car when a tune I hadn’t heard in over twenty years came on, was able to get enough of the words in the lyrics to google and eventually find it. As I’m mainly working with 18-23 year olds It’s really nice to know that for once I’m talking to people who understand what I’m saying.

  2. “part of one of my mix tapes where I taped songs off the radio”…I know what you’re talking about….amazing, but i’ve never did it. Why? Because in that period in Italy radios play only our music, pop music of really bad reputation that i hate. But i remember taped songs off from other cassettes (my first taped off cassette was Skid Row’s “Slave to the grind”!!!!

    1. I was listening to Slave to the Grind the other day. It completely holds up, and the three slower songs ‘Quicksand Jesus’, ‘In a Darkened Room’ and ‘Wasted Time’ are three of the very best non-love slower songs you’ll ever hear.

“You’ll see the sickly hands of time / Will write your final rhyme / And end a memory…..”

  3. I think i’m having trouble posting this, or I’m annoying everyone with triple posts. Am going to try doing it as two parts.

“in around 4 hours, this film event will be happening for me”

As I can’t go to the cinema without my family and that’s too violent for my family you have no idea how jealous I am. I practically drooled when being told about the laughter, the tears and the barbecue. I trust all went well.

“I do not apologise for Star Wars references”

    Where Star Wars is concerned

“I have killed a dragon, and I did it without even having a Dragonlance!”

You killed a Wizard in a fancy dress costume in hand to hand combat. It’s impressive

“The enemy must have tortured him by making him watch The Phantom Menace scenes featuring Jar Jar Binks over and over and over”

For the record I didn’t dislike Jar Jar that much. He was meant to be daft comic relief and he, frankly, wasn’t that funny, but for example in The Phantom Menace when he’s asked by his troops what they should do and he puts his hands in the air that was the sensible option at that point. On the other hand I also spoke up on Paido’s behalf.

Please Aussiesmurf! The Darklords engaged in constructing huge building while destroying the local environment, is there a parallel? Am I missing something easy? Am I a Stormtrooper?

    1. Ok, that last gif doesn’t really fit, but I just thought it was great anyway.

      On Behalf of The Defense:

      Exhibit One :https://lonewolfsaga.wordpress.com/2016/09/11/flight-from-the-dark-attempt-1-part-1/

Where we read: “The wizard whips around and sends a bolt of deadly energy at the Giak who dies on the spot. They run screaming into the woods, while the wizard walks over, extending his hand in friendship. Given that I’m yet to kill or even wound a single enemy, I’m hoping the friendship isn’t entirely one way…”

      Exhibit Two: https://lonewolfsaga.wordpress.com/2017/01/05/shadow-on-the-sand-attempt-2-part-4/

Where we read: ” I have to make an R10 check and, if I know my Joe Dever, there is a possibility of an insta-death. Just as I am preparing for yet another death from falling from a great height, I am caught in mid-air by a ‘mass of sticky fibres’, which snares me like a ‘fly in a web’.”

Not only does Young Banedon save our ungrateful Hero’s life but he and his trusty crew also then have to fight a desperate mid-air battle to save it again.

I’m not looking up the references but he’s also our Hero’s transport and guide to Tahou in The Cauldron of Doom, he provides distraction from you’re enemies (i.e. he gets painted as the largest target in all of Northern Magnamund) in The Jungle of Horror’s, and he’s your welcoming committe as well as supplier of plans and protective Golden Amulet in The Master’s Of Darkness.

      You owe him! End of.

Did they really show all five Twilight Movies back to back? With Extra Content?

And now we await the results of your sinister decisions. Thanks again for the laughter and fun. Till next time.

P.s. Apologies if this is old news but have all Star Wars fans here seen Cello Wars???

  4. When awaiting your approval the post will still appear for me with a note like “This Post Awaiting Moderation. The post was simply too large because of the two stormtroopers (but when I found them I just HAD to use them). Splitting it did the trick. Limits on sizes of posts makes very good sense in a Universe where jerks roam unhindered over the internet.

P.s. Thanks for always approving my posts so far.

  5. p.s. I listened to “Not an Addict” exactly once (prior to today) but despite that her singing “It’s not a habit, its cool, I feel alive” along with the tune sings through my head for a while most nights that I’m trying to get to sleep. That is one seriously memorable tune and lyrics. The air of gradually increasing need for the next fix is also very well conveyed by the video/song …. not that I’m admitting to any addictions of course but

  6. “For those like me who, in their childhood, enjoyed the Dragonlance novels, there’s a great podcast at Dungeons and Dweebs where they pontificate at length on reading the books as adults.” Enjoyed the podcast–thanks!

I liked Dragonlance, though even as a teenager it bugged me that they’d left enormous gaps in the plot of the first trilogy to sell game modules. I didn’t enjoy having one section end with, “Let’s go into this tower,” and the next one begin with, “Well, now we have the all-powerful Dragonlance! Wasn’t that cool? But we won’t say anything else about how we found it, ever again. Onward and upward!”

Re-reading them a few years ago was harder going, though I still enjoyed Tasslehoff. Almost nothing in Chronicles Book 3 made *any* sense at all except in terms of driving the plot along. To paraphrase a bit I found particularly funny:

“Like all elves, we sea elves have an overwhelming reverence for life. That’s why we rescued you.”

“Great, thanks! … um, why are we stuck in these three-hundred-year-old underwater air bubbles?”

“That’s where we put the people we rescue.”

“Can you help us get back to the surface?”

“No. We don’t care what happens to people once we’ve saved them from the actual shipwreck. Sometimes we come back from a swim and they’re gone. Maybe they found a way to the surface? You can go look for it, if you like.”

“You morons! Reverence for life? You’re just giving people a few days of false hope before they drown themselves in despair!”

“Na na na na na. Not listening.”

“Dammit. We’re screwed. This reintroduces dramatic tension, right?”

“…OK, we’ll take you to the surface now. Anywhere you like. As long as it’s the city where the rest of the party are currently hanging out. Anywhere else, there are dragons.”

    “Wha?”

“Like all elves, we sea elves have an overwhelming reverence for plot.”
