The Deathlord of Ixia – Attempt 2, Part 2

[Aside : Answers to the music trivia quiz will be posted shortly]

Back to the Deathlord of Ixia….

Attempt 2???

You failure!!!

giphy5

The brighter side of this second attempt is that Lone Wolf has, on this go-round, battled  his way through the initial portion of the gamebook and is, now, on maximum Endurance!

Back to where we left you, after Lone Wolf digs himself out of the snow / ice, he has to decide on the preferable approach to the fortress of Xaagon.

Given how wonderfully (no, not really) my last attempt went, I resolve to enter through the western entrance to the fortress….

Ahhh, Kanye, you’ve made your bed – now lie in it.

Surprisingly, in an ‘its a Trap’ sense, I am able to stroll through the west gate without immediate opposition.

I do hear a low hum, emanating from the ‘final boss’ area of the so-called ‘Crystal Spire’.

Because things were starting to get to easy, I have to react cautiously to a bunch of ‘skeletal warriors’ marching down the road and towards an ice-covered plaza.

In other words, this is Lone Wolf right now –

tenor6

While I’m hiding, I ponder the fact that in a field of 32 teams, my beloved Australian football team is 300/1 odds to win the World Cup…

Sigh.

In any event, here’s the official book’s illustration…

Project Aon link – Skeleton Warriors marching…

As I approach the plaza (and the spire) my Grand Master skills inform me that my prey is within the central spire (duh…) and my Kai-screen protects me (to an extent) from the evil psychic juju, resulting in the mere (!) loss of 2 Endurance points.

Moving forward, I again am confronted by the three enemies who I now know to be Cabalah….

[SPOILER]

the-night-is-dark-and-full-of-spoilers-14038701

Given the lack of success in Lone Wolf’s last incarnation with using a bow, I elect this time to use Kai-surge, in an attempt to end this battle without senseless brawling.

My psychic blast has little effect (apart from helping me lose an Endurance point) and I am now confronted by these fiends, approaching in tandem….

giphy6

Having made all the suitable ‘bring it on’ noises, I note that there is an option to evade combat with these fiends.

With absolutely no shame, I take this choice, dive over a mound of ‘ice and rubble’ and enter Xaagon without breaking a sweat.

tenor7

I dash in and skulk within a ‘ruined watchtower’, during which time I avoid the need to eat a Meal due to my Grand Huntmastery.

I patiently wait (and seriously, Lone Wolf is better than I, because I get bored SO EASILY) until there are no obvious zombies in my direct eyesight.

There’s now a whole *blah, blah* segment, the practical effect of which is that I skulk upstairs until I am in front of an archway filled with a ‘shimmering curtain of light’.

Because of plot reasons, I am apparently certain that the object of my quest lies beyond this archway.

tenor8

My lack of the Discipline of Telegnosis means I must make the uninformed choice of whether to charge through the (obviously dangerous) curtain of light or try to find an alternative entrance.

Trying to find an easier entrance?!  Sold!

As I roam around looking for an entrance, a (plot-mandated) wave of nausea strikes me, causing a loss of 2 Endurance.

More importantly, I find a less obvious entrance, where the only difficulty is presented by a door of ‘opaque green crystal’ set into the north wall.

Rather than make extensive comment on the design choices of the interior decorator, I examine the crystal lock which some artisan has seen fit to install in the crystal door.

For psychic reasons, I somehow understand that the combination consists of  :

  • Firstly, the number of islands which can be found between the Tozaz Sea and the Gulf of Konkor.
  • Secondly, the total of islands which can be found in Lake Ghargon
  • Thirdly the number of cities that can be found on the banks of the River Zegar.

And before you complain too loudly, here’s the map which will, presumably, answer these questions.

In theory.

After considering the map for some time……

SPOILER SPACE

I was astonished at how easy this question was, particularly when compared to the similiar question in Shadow of the Sand.

As everyone with a double-digit IQ can quickly realise, the answer is 100, and using this, I smugly open the door and dash up the stairs on the other side.

In the resulting chamber, I spy an Onyx Key, resting on a plinth guarded with some fantasy / sci-fi glowing shield.

The book, though, didn’t reckon with my Grand Master Discipline of Kai-alchemy, which allows me to raise the ‘force-field’ and grab the necessary key.

While I savour my (temporary) victory against the forces of gamebook entropy, I leave my readers hanging out for more…..

Pop culture!

Here, I get a little personal.

The Australian pop duo Savage Garden were, arguably, the biggest pop group in the world in the early 2000s, with 23 million album sales.

In fact, my lovely wife insisted on using their song ‘Truly, Madly, Deeply’ as our wedding waltz.

For today’s purposes, I want to note that mega-successful groups of this kind often get to do something a little different for the 4th-5th single of their album.

I give you ‘Crash and Burn’.  Each person can react individually, but for me :

  • The song’s lyrics give a fantastic message of support and love.
  • The music video’s message (watch for the writing on the screen) is thoughtful and interesting.
  • The use of AUSLAN in the last 45 seconds of the video gets me EVERY.  TIME.

If you disagree, I respect that…

  1. Gambling odds are based on the proportion of money bet on each competitor, not the empirical chance of victory. Even if the Australian team were unquestionably the best in the world, if not much money is bet on them, then they’ll have long odds. This is also the reason that the England team always has much shorter odds than the ten million to one or so that represents the actual likelihood of winning the tournament.

  2. In this playthrough, you’ve evaded Cabalahs in two separate occasions instead of trying to free the world of their influence. They obviously have horned-cyclop potential.

While powerful in a fight, they don’t try to bother our hero too much.

Cabbie 1 : “Hey look, a guy who is… alive. The only one in a 100 km (at least) radius!”
    Cabbie 2 : “Let’s kill him”
    Cabbie 1 & 3 : “I’m game”.
    Lone Wolf activate Kai Surge
Cabbie 1-3 : “Ouch, a powerful psychic attack from the forces of Good, with an intensity no other good-aligned warrior had the ability to project since Sun Eagle! Good thing we’re immune to it”
Cabbie 1 draws a silver wand and blasts at LW.
LW dives for cover and quit the fight.
Cabbie 2 : “we could chase or give the alarm to our supreme overlord standing unaware in the tower very close to where the suspicious intruder of dubious intent just disappeared!”
Cabbie 1 and 3 : “errr, no, actually, we’re not some lowly undead slaves, we’re undead Cabalahs. It’s not 5pm and we’ll report him tomorrow at 9am, after enjoying our 16 hours of paid rest, despite having no need to sleep or even feeling any kind of tireness, with us being dead already.”
Cabbie 2 : “ah, yes, sorry, I hadn’t noticed it was already this late in the day, err, eternal night. Let’s glide ominously toward the bar and have a few drinks instead”.

After all, since explaining the name Cabalah by deriving it from Kabbalah, an esoteric method rooted in Judaism, didn’t shed any light. Maybe Cabalahs is used to refer to members of a cabal? In other word, a union? That would explain their very generous work-hour agreements.

We already established the great social integration of undead of all kind in the Ixian society, and the behaviour of the three Cabalahs here, barring any other explanation on why they didn’t raise any alarm, hints at extremely worker-friendly labor laws being in place under the Deathlord.

Ecologically-conscious, as demonstrated by fenrirwolfganger, and worker-friendly? That sounds very much like the Cenerese druids. I am getting the impression that this mission is yet another trick of the Elder Magi to use LW in their ongoing crusade to remove any leftist organization in Magnamund.

    1. As a conscientious hard working union member I’m not sure I like your depiction of the effect of Unions and worker friendly labor-laws … I was literally typing the last part when I realised that of the three workers in my department today at least one and possibly two are hungover and doing no work at all and getting time and a half for that … ok, maybe just maybe you have a point there. But I’d argue that this is actually an example of extremely bad management rather than the effect of good labor laws.

Loved the conversation though. Personally one of my favourite bits in Lord of the Rings is when Sam overhears the two Uruk-Hai complaining about how them up top were claiming a great victory but it was going to be the “fighting Uruk-Hai” who’d have to sort out the mess, that was real workers speech.

  3. So today’s episode can be summed up with the maxim “Strike like a Serpent, Run like a Frill Necked Lizard”

Its a sad reflection on the state of the (real) world that the Kayne West meme was believable enough that I had to check to see if it was true or not.

“I ponder the fact that in a field of 32 teams, my beloved Australian football team is 300/1 odds to win the World Cup…”

And lost the France match due to darnfangled modern technology. Sorry about that. You’re still ahead of my native Ireland who didn’t even qualify.

Against the Cabalah “My psychic blast has little effect”

Other than KEEPING YOU ALIVE!!!! Sheesh! Talk about ingratitude.

“I patiently wait (and seriously, Lone Wolf is better than I, because I get bored SO EASILY) until there are no obvious zombies in my direct eyesight.”

Yes, because everyone knows how fast paced the legal profession is with trials started and finished in the blink of a (geological) eye. Anyway, I’m sure that come the Zombie Apocalypse we’ll all be able to wait patiently hoping desperately there will be a point with “no obvious zombies in (our) direct eyesight”.

“I was astonished at how easy this question was, particularly when compared to the similiar question in Shadow of the Sand.”

Only reason that the Shadow on the Sand question was so hard was because you had to have taken a particular series of decisions beforehand to know that Vassagonia was also the Union of the Seven Cities. Going back to look at your post there it was also great to see one of the superlative pictures you posted of Ms Julie Delpy.

Oh, and you posted that Simpsons Gif before. Can’t remember exactly where but it was about the point where I realised that your being Lefty didn’t mean Communist,

    Pop Culture

“There’s always been heartache and pain, and when its over you’ll breath again.” Plus the writing “We scream to avoid suffering in silence”.

Yeah, good song with good music, slow and gentle when needed. Weird imagery in the background. I liked the girls in a type of cocktail bar acting like flamingoes, the spider web scene was ambiguous on was it killing or erotic. Well worth seeing.

On “Communicate Any Way Any How” I’m off to India in August and my 2nd eldest Sister in Law and I always have at least one conversation when I’m over there. Why so few? Because she speaks no English and I speak practically no Malayalam. But she wants to have at least one chat while I’m there and that’s what happens. I never understand how it happens but it happens.

    Until next time.
