  1. 1,4-6,8?,10,12-13,15-16,19,21-25,28,30,32,35-38,40-41,47-48,50-52,55,58,61,64-66,69,73,78-79,81,83,85-86,89-90,94,97?,99-105,107,109,112,115-118,127,130-136,138-139,143-145,152-153,155-156,158,160-165,168-169 (that’s two runs of seven in a row plus a run of six)

87! Over 50%! And some of those presumably Australian-based ones I had no shot at! Well, 87-ish. I wrote ‘Scrubs’ instead of ‘No Scrubs’, and ‘Keep Em Separated’ for ‘Come Out and Play’, but ‘Keep Em…’ is sometimes added in (), so I’ll say 75% for TLC’s hit and 25% for The Offspring’s earworm, makes one right answer. Besides, some of your lyrics were slightly off, though the spirit came through each time. Oh, and quite a few were pre-1970, but don’t worry about it.But I fell into the trap of being positive that Britney’s ‘Oops…’ was actually ‘Hit Me Baby…’, and I couldn’t in good conscience count it. Also, I knew “I won’t do what you tell me”, even without the opening “FU”, was RATM, but whiffed twice on the song name, so no point for that. You seemed to ask for only the songs and not the artist, though I did write those down. For ‘You’re the Voice’, the classic theme from Hot Rod, I wrote John Badham, but thought that was off. Yes, I now know that’s a fairly famous film director. Still counted it. And I wrote down ‘Hard to Handle’ as the Black Crowes, but knew it was originally Otis Redding. Concrete Blonde also famously covered ‘Everybody Knows’, though I wrote Leonard Cohen. Oh, somehow, I got both songs from Jon Bon Jovi’s Young Guns II soundtrack. And the three songs with a definite local connection, one from the hometown Violent Femmes, and both from Madison-based Garbage.

What did I get right that nearly killed me first? ‘…To a neon god they prayed’ nagged at me, until I recognized one of the best and favorite songs from Paul Simon, a top-3 American pop songwriter. Along with Bob Dylan and, who’d be 3rd? Brian Wilson? Carole King? Neil Diamond? Anyway, yeah, of course ‘Songs of Silence’. ‘…I guess you scared me too’ was so familiar, and then I realized it was Concrete Blonde’s ‘Joey’, which I have praised in the comments on this very blog. I’d talked about how hard it can be to get lyrics with no melody, but I knew the melody of ‘You give me nothing now it’s all I’ve got’ and still couldn’t get it. Finally I realized it was ‘One’ the most famous song from U2’s classic ‘Achtung Baby’. If you’d quoted a deeper cut like ‘So Cruel’ or ‘The Fly’, I’d have probably gotten it right away.

What did I think I got right but, upon Googling THAT SONG ONLY, did I realize I got wrong. even though I was familiar with the correct answers?. I got the right country for ‘I’m all out of faith’, but thought it was from Air Supply’s ‘I’m All Out Of Love’ instead. Seemed logical. And I could just hear N’Sync’s Justin or JC croon ‘To my heart I must be true’, followed by ‘This I promise you’. ‘The game of love was all rained out’ should have totally been in Smashmouth’s ‘All-Star’. But the one I was SHOCKED to get wrong was ‘I’ve been up, I’m revived, can’t say I’m not alive’. I could’ve sworn it was from ZZ Top’s ‘Tush’. It fits perfectly!

What did I know I knew but just couldn’t get in the end? Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”, Grease’s “The One That I Want”, Billy Joel’s “A Matter of Trust”, Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise”, Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is A Place On Earth”, Elton John’s “I Don’t Wanna Go On With You Like That”, Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark” (oof, that one hurt), Mr. Big’s “To Be With You”, Bush’s “Glycerine”, the Partridge Family’s “I Think I Love You” That’s 10 points I left on the table. This was infuriatingly fun, thank you.

      1. It must have been her look in the famous “Hit Me Baby…” video, the “innocent” school girl outfit that was anything but.

  2. Trivia time: “One Night In Bangkok” singer Murray Head is the brother of Giles himself, Anthony Stewart Head. I was shocked to discover this. I guess I figured that Murray Head was a stage name, since the song was so wonderfully ribald, Murray’s kind of a funny first name, and ‘head’ is a euphemism for, well, I’ll assume all English-speaking countries know that one. Meanwhile, the fact that his name in the credits includes a “Stewart” or “S.” implies that there was already a working actor named Anthony Head when Giles started getting roles. If so, the first one has clearly been eclipsed. See also “Michael J. Fox”.

Jon Bon Jovi wrote “Blaze of Glory” as the theme to Young Guns II after Emilio Estevez asked to use “Wanted Dead Or Alive” as the theme. I REALLY hope Emilio knew ‘I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride’ was a metaphor for life as a rocker on tour and not about, you know, actual cowboys and horses.

“The Rose” is great enough to immortalize songwriter Amanda McBroom, but she was also an actress, best known for passing judgment on Data’s personhood on Star Trek: TNG’s “The Measure of a Man”.

“Late Night with David Letterman” bandleader Paul Schaffer co-wrote “It’s Raining Men”. That wasn’t one of your songs, but it just came to me, and I thought you should know.

  3. Well, i take some pleasure in knowing there was no way I’d have gotten most of those anyway. While I recognise the names of some of the one’s I missed I didn’t really listen to the songs themselves much.

Still amused/embarrased at being so proud on (32) at getting Freddie Mercury as the singer but forgetting he was in Queen.

    (49) She was telling the “next-door neighbour” not to cry for her? Now that IS a song I know but it never sank in who she was talking to, as in ever.

    (57) “Took her by the hand, kicked sand in my face”. Bizzarly enough, now that I know its from “Don’t Call me Dude” I can even SEE in my mind that scene from when you put it in your Pop Culture, pretty useless at this point.

    (155) Yeah, actually I should have gotten “Who needs a heart” from Tina Turner (it was played often enough at the time).

    (169) Whitesnake, that one IS embarrasing because the back of my brain was valiently playing the tune when I read the lyric but the front chose to pay no attention.

Well, it was fun, and a reminder to go and listen to some of those tunes again (and maybe even notice the words this time).

Ok, my one “No No, No No No No, No No No No” and its NOT “No Limits” (anyone who gets this, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves!)
