The Deathlord of Ixia

The Deathlord of Ixia – Attempt 2, Part 4

In something that seemed too good to be true, in our last instalment, my MEGASWORD managed to dispel certain ill-disposed insectoids without a fight.

Before I even get a chance to be complacent, a ‘new horror’ appears from the floor!

Some ‘jackal-like’ creature, describing itself as ‘Tagazin’ promises my doom, death, torture, yadayadayada…

I remember vaguely than Tagazin was a demon summoned by Roark in book 6, but that doesn’t seem to be relevant to the current confrontation….

earnestimaginaryglassfrog

As this monstrosity slowly advances, I am somewhat relieved to confirm that I have the Kai-surge Discipline and have, in fact, reached the exalted (and self-imposed (!)) rank of Sun Lord!

I hurl a ball of psychic energy at Tamazin, and have to make an R10 check, and then multiply the result by 2….

I carefully note my result of (9×2)=18 before turning to the next page…

It is Tamazin and I, locked in combat!

Project Aon link – Tamazin, looking like an Alsatian guard-dog

I gulp four doses of Laumspur, and start to take one of Alether, until I realise that it won’t actually make any difference.  There’s also no point in using Kai-surge.

The good news : I get to reduce Tamazin’s Endurance by the 18 figure which I previously noted.

The bad news :

Demonlord Tamazin – CS : 55 (!!!!!!!!), E : 60-18=42

Lone Wolf : CS : 32, E : 37

Are you freaking serious?!?

Combat Skill of 55?!

Admittedly, I apparently am victorious (or at least get to turn to another page) If I reduce the Demonlord to 25 Endurance.

I have a small chance of doing that, as long as I avoid the instakill R10 results of 1 or 2.

And…..

Then I, without exaggeration, get 5 consecutive results of 3 or 4, which mean that I lose 40 Endurance, without scratching my enemy even once….

I’ll be honest.  If this fight is an unavoidable one, and I guess I’ll find that out shortly, I may have to review my ‘play completely honestly’ policy, simply because this blog could get REALLY boring.

Pop culture!

After that fiasco, I’m feeling a bit gloomy.

So!

Melissa Etheridge has forged a place in the ‘women rock’ pantheon, with a fantastic 30 year career.

For mine, though, the pick is still her debut self-titled album, with 10 songs uniformly about loss and heartbreak.  The dark horse of the collection is ‘The Late September Dogs’.

Have a listen

  1. You can use the MegaSword against Tagazin. The minute you are asked if you possess it before entering the Shadow Gate, it’s ok to use again. That gives you back quite a bit of CS. Pity it only helps a little. Good luck trying again!

    1. Yeah, getting asked if you possess the Sommerswerd was a subtle hint that you can use it again. Look at it this way: You’re already in the Deathlord’s inner sanctum. He pretty well knows you’re there by now or stuff wouldn’t be flooding out of the shadow gate to attack you, so there’s nothing the Sommerswerd could betray.

That said, even if you’d wielded the Sommerswerd, turned on Kai-surge, and quaffed an Alether potion, you’d still be at -5 for the fight and a series of 3’s and 4’s would’ve left you at 7EP and Tagazin somewhere in the 27-30EP range so it still wouldn’t be looking good for you, but maybe next time with better rolls. We can only hope.

  2. You’d have encountered Tagazin before if you’d taken one of the more challenging routes through book 10.

Incidentally, what’s with all the ‘Tamazin’s. Still smarting from when someone named Tamsin wronged you (or a client) badly?

      1. While it was a long time ago, combined with The Late September Dogs, I just want to give the younger Aussiesmurf a Sympathetic Manly Macho Masculine clap on the Shoulder. Shame he didn’t realize then that there was so much better to come, but it would have spoiled the surprise if he had.

      2. Ah! I don’t have to look up what she said about that song and you, I remember it, Hmph! Would SHE have been willing to snooze while you wrote blogs read around the world WHILE ALSO using that computer to do a course AND getting DUX in it? Not to mention making up words and saying you’ve the patience of a chicken? Or … lots of other things. Ancient pains can still sting the heart sometimes, but the past… the past pulls us back while pushing us forward but its still just the past, its the present that’s the gift to enjoy. Plus we can always make jokes about both.

  3. I am wondering if LW holds graduation ceremonies in the Monastery. “Hey, today I feel like changing the way you all adress me, therefore I decree that I have reached the rank of…. SUN KNIGHT! We’ll throw a party and you’ll present me with…. A SHRUBBERY.” so said the Knight who says KAI.

It could get boring for the other Kai Lords. At least with the lower ranks there was a long, established tradition of acquiring time-honored disciplines and tests (“No Jimmy, you can’t be a Doan yet, not until you can open a simple lock by willing it open”). But with GM ranks, it’s just LW adding Magi Magick and Toran Brotherhood magic because he happened to be taught by their respective grand masters. (“Hey guys, today I got a really great Minesweeper score, let’s make that a discipline! And make up a rank for it!” (to which all the other Kai Lords started betting on when they would get a title of Sun Bachelor at some point but they couldn’t find anyone to take up the bet on LW actually scoring even with his wingman Banedon teaching him the GHB Charm spell).

    1. Galantor Pondered ““No Jimmy, you can’t be a Doan yet, not until you can open a simple lock by willing it open”

Fenrir the Pedantic pads off to check was there such a Kai Rank. There Was! It was Level 3. Fenrir Bows in Deep Respect. Not just funny but accurate to boot.

“they couldn’t find anyone to take up the bet on LW actually scoring even with his wingman Banedon teaching him the GHB Charm spell)”

Am I the only one who had a Two and A Half Men vision with Banedon as Charlie, Lone Wolf as Alan and one of the Dwarfs as Jake? … Am I the only one who will ADMIT to having such a vision?

And we finally have a plausible explanation for why Bardsmanship is on the discipline list from book 21.

  6. Belated Sympathetic Manly Macho Masculine clap on the Back Aussismurf. As least you whipped Tagazin’s ass in the next installment (hopefully while crying out “Bad Doggie!”

“I remember vaguely than Tagazin was a demon summoned by Roark in book 6,”

Considering the shortness of that scene you’re remembering the name is quite impressive (says the guy who can’t remember a name beyond 20 seconds)

    Pop Culture:

“Damn my soul that remembers and clutches to this pain”. Ah, yes, now that’s a line I can relate too.

She refers to a child that walks before it can crawl, actually I know a child like that. The parents put him in one of those baby walkers so he could walk around in it just fine until he was able to walk by himself. It was only then that he decided to learn how to crawl, he’d no interest in doing that beforehand.

    Roll on Tagazin the re-match.
