The Dungeons of Torgar

The Dungeons of Torgar – Attempt 1,Part 1

Aside : For those who are wondering about the lovely Rose Byrne :

  1. My wife and I loved the name Rose, and the only reason it isn’t our daughter’s first name is because we didn’t want her sharing the name Rose Byrne with a celebrity (it is now my daughter’s middle name).
  2. If you are interested in her work, I’d recommend the Australian crime movie (a film reminiscent of Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels) called Two Hands, with a star-making turn by Heath Ledger.

Or the criminally underrated series Damages, with Glenn Close :

Back to our show :

You know how I promised you REAMS of exposition?  Here we go –

  • Before I embark on my mission, we decide to use Banedon as a decoy (!) in that he will journey back to Sommerlund on his skyship, while wearing my precious, precious Kai green outfit.
  • I, meanwhile, disguised as ‘just another’ messenger, ride out of Tahou on horse.
  • I arrive at the city of Farina, before discarding yet another (!) horse, as I catch a barge to Talon, followed by passage on a ‘merchantman’ to Garthen, capital of Talestria.
  • Garthen has previously fallen to the Darklords, but was re-taken with the assistance of a dwarven army from Bor.  No word as to whether they used their guns or Bor-brew as weapons or tactical aids.
  • Oh, you thought I’d finished.  Settle down, we’re not even halfway through paragraph 1!

  • The good guys have also captured the major enemy stronghold of Xanar, and continue to take ground to the west, along the Blackshroud trail.
  • To maintain secrecy, I avoid the castle of Queen Evaine, and leave the next day for Eru aboard a ‘brigantine’.

Aside : For those, like me, who hadn’t heard that word before, a brigantine is a two masted sailing ship :

I reach Eru and a clandestine meeting with Prince Graygor is arranged in a suitably private cellar of an ‘anonymous warehouse’.

And, seriously, by now all the descriptions of fantasy town and locations start to blur together.

Aside : I must be honest.  I literally fell asleep at the desk during this portion.  Joe Dever seemed to prioritise the display of his world-building over getting his eager young readers INTO THE ACTION.

In summary, the Prince of Eru and Lone Wolf travel north and, five days, later, reach the town of Luomi.

I finally get a choice :

  • I can ride to the town of Pirsi and seek out Sebb Jarel, one of the only survivors of those who have attempted to travel within the Isle of Ghosts.
  • I can accopmany the Prince to a forthcoming battle at Cetza, in the hope that a victory will clear my way to move forward through the war-torn terrain.

Once again – here’s the map

With no memory at all of this adventure, I decide to seek out the fabled Sebb Jarel, simply because in (most of) these types of adventures, seeking the legendary hero in a secret location usually works out…

Before I leave, the Prince gives me a Signet Ring, which is a bonus special item which is not counted against my overall total.

I bid the Prince farewell, and ride peacefully (and, hopefully, unobserved) down the freeway.

Project Aon link – Coat of Arms

I eventually reach a flowing river, with an accompanying ‘fire-blackened’ watchtower.  A wisp of smoke curling upwards from the chimney, along with a tied-up horse, makes me consider that, despite the damage to the tower, someone is at home.

With the whole ‘not liking being attacked by behind by people you didn’t investigate’ thing, I resolve to check out the watchtower before I cross the bridge.

Looking through the burned-out doorway, I see a man cooking a bird that he’s nailed with his dagger.  Interestingly, he is dressed in crimson (!!!) and carries a bullwhip, which is loaded by way of attached metal studs.

He invites me to join him for his meal.  I can either accept or ride on, with , surprisingly, no option of ‘stab stranger with MEGASWORD and steal his whip’.

giphy27

Since I’ve bothered to come to the doorway, I resolve to accept the offer of friendship, notwithstanding the unnerving crimson colour of his attire.

He notes my messenger outfit, introducing himself as Halgar of Pirsi.  My Sixth Sense (in a pleading display of its rare operation in these latter books) lets me know that he is an honest man, and I let him know that I seek…..Sebb Jarel.

vlvg3

He notes the Prince’s ring on my finger, and asks whether I am running an errand on the Prince’s behalf.

Using my skill of Invisibility, I mimic the local accent to perfection, and agree that I am on urgent business for the Prince.

In a stroke of luck, Halgar is Sebb’s brother (!!) and gives me the following advice :

  • Sebb Jarel is encamped at the foot of Hawkridge Mountain.
  • I should stay on the trail to Pirsi until I reach the mining settlement of Kaig.
  • I then take the track which ‘follows the stream’.
  • Finally, when I enter the forest, I should be wary of the roaming ‘pack of Akataz’.

And I ride on….

  1. Yup! Nailed it. While you give a concise and logical reason for your choice ALL your disloyal fans knew you’d avoid the Cetza BATTLE like the plague (even with Nathan shamelessly plugging it). Still, I’m confident that with enough deaths you’ll give it a shot. Btw, you finally got a character in Fantasy wearing crimson who’s a good guy.

We differ considerably in our reactions to the world building. You fall asleep over uprisings in Barrakeesh and withdrawal of Vassagonian armies and actually snore through a mighty battle lasting three days and nights against overwhelming odds only waking up at the mention of Dwarfs so you can ask about Bor-brew (just how distant is your Irish ancestry anyway?). Its like at the end of Cauldron where you don’t even mention two enemy armies “smashed and routed” while the third “fights a desperate rearguard action” (bet it wasn’t the Giak army). Not complaining, if you were more like me noone would be reading your blog (and your fatality rate would be so much higher), I just find the different viewpoint fascinating.

Having said the above I’m sure it will come as NO surprise that several times today alone I’ve wanted a “Just listen” gif like that for when talking to my son. Some questions NEED long answers, noone likes it but if you don’t accept it you end up with Trump for President. The “boring” gif is what people want to use when I’m talking 😕

Nice plug for Rose Byrne, as I said I felt she nailed her part in 28 Weeks, even when she was in the same room as Idris Elba she had presence.

I know I’ve replied back to front but it was the order they called out to come in. Roll on getting to make more decisions.

    1. I didn’t fall asleep DURING the battles, uprisings etc. I fell asleep during someone’s DRY AND BORING recitation of events. “This happened, and then this happened, and then this happened and thzzzzzzzzzz”.

I am slightly disconcerted by people openly wishing death upon Lone Wolf purely so they get to read descriptions of different paths through the book….

And re long answers – One of the basic dishonest rhetorical tricks is for the person putting forward an outrageous proposition (ie. that 9/11 was an ‘inside job’ or that the moon landing was ‘faked’) to demand that, somehow YOU have the obligation of proving them ‘wrong’. Always insist that they produce POSITIVE evidence for their (ludicrous) opinion before you say anything else.

      1. “Alwsys insist that they produce POSITIVE evidence”

/Fenrir Bows/ Master! That is where I keep going wrong.I really NEED to learn how to say, “Prove it!” (The Mullah Nasruddin has also pointed this out).

I have never WISHED death on Lone Wolf or Avenger (not even when you made upsetting choices like bypassing the burning hospital), my Manly Macho Masculine Sympathetic Claps on the Back are always sincere. But when it happens it does provide opportunities for variety or correction (so long as its not simply survival by attrition). That said, I’d usually have trouble with the partisans but you’ve a good skill set for dealing with them.

I see your point on the “this and that happening”. After all, I well remember the mighty battle only saved by the Dwarfs from years ago, but not the route you took, Banedon’s masquerade or even meeting the prince.

  2. Oooh, Twitter slam against local legend Gordon Gano! Them’s fighting words! Though you’re so far away, and we get along so well. And his strength is songwriting rather than singing. Never mind.

  3. Oh, that’s how you deal with the Crimson Man! Lacking Invisibility, I failed my local accent test and the assh*le decided to stab me, so I had to kill him and conceal the body. And that was Sebb’s brother? Great way to start a quest to get Sebb’s help!

    1. I feel your pain Nathan. Making it worse, for me, with his skill set he’ll also avoid my other favourite route. At least we can still count on hearty laughs, amusing gifs and maybe even photos of Ms Delpy, Rose Byrne or even Ryan Gosling

      1. Your other favourite route being the one with Mister Vindictive and his nasty dog, right (names have been changed to protect the far-from-innocent)?

One of my principal issues with this book is how off-the-beaten-track that encounter is.

  4. I agree with Pirsi’s road….it sounds more logical to me, you have to work your way with discretion (just like Avenger), while imagine Lone Wolf put in the middle of the Cetza Battle with his MEGASWORD, you can kiss your discretion goodbye, the news will arrive at Gnaag’s ears in a blink of an eye!
